Pembimbing I: Dr. Abdul Asib, M.Pd; Pembimbing II: Dr. Ngadiso, M.Pd. Tesis. Surakarta. Program Pasca Sarjana Program Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta. 2011. ABSTRACT Helmi. S890809106 The Effectiveness of Group Investigation Model to Teach Reading Viewed from Students’ Intelligence (An Experimental Study at the Eleventh Graders of MA Muallimin NW Pancor in the Academic Year of 2010/2011). First Consultant: Dr. Abdul Asib, M.Pd; Second Consultant: Dr. Ngadiso, M.Pd. A Thesis: English Education Department Graduate School, Sebelas Maret University of Surakarta. 2011. This research is aimed at finding out whether: (1) Group Investigation Model is more effective than Direct Instruction Model to teach reading at the Eleventh Graders of MA Muallimin NW Pancor in the academic year of 2010/2011; (2) the students who have high intelligence have better reading skill than those who have low intelligence at the Eleventh Graders of MA Muallimin NW Pancor in the academic year of 2010/2011; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching models and intelligence for teaching reading at the Eleventh Graders of MA Muallimin NW Pancor in the academic year of 2010/2011. The method which was applied in this research was experimental study. It was conducted at the Eleventh Graders of MA Muallimin NW Pancor in the academic year of 2010/2011. The population of the research is the Eleventh Graders of MA Muallimin NW Pancor in the academic year of 2010/2011. The samples were two classes. In taking the sample, cluster random sampling technique was used. Each class was divided into two groups (the students who have high and low intelligence). Then, the techniques which were used to collect the data were document for getting the data of the students’ intelligence and multiple choice test for getting the data of the students’ reading skill. The test was tried out to get valid and reliable items. The data were analyzed by using multifactor analysis of ANOVA 2×2 and tukey test. Based on the data results of the analysis, there are some research findings that can be taken: (1) Group Investigation Model is not significantly different from Direct Instruction Model to teach reading because Fo is lower than Ft and qo(C1) is lower than qt(C2); (2) The reading skill of the students who have high intelligence is not significantly different from that of those who have low intelligence because Fo is lower than Ft and qo(R1) is lower than qt(R2); and (3) There is an interaction between teaching models and intelligence for teaching reading because Fo is higher than Ft: (a) for the students who have high intelligence, Group Investigation Model is significantly different from Direct Instruction Model to teach reading because qo(A1B1) is higher than qt(A2B1) and Group Investigation Model is more effective than Direct Instruction Model to teach reading because mean of A1B1 is higher than A2B1; and (b) for the students who have low intelligence, Direct Instruction Model is significantly different from Group Investigation Model to teach reading because qo(A1B2) is higher than qt(A2B2) and Direct Instruction Model is more effective than Group Investigation Model to teach reading because mean of A1B2 is higher than A2B2; Based on the findings, it can be concluded that in general Group Investigation Model is not more effective than Direct Instruction Model to teach reading. For the students who have high intelligence, Group Investigation Model is more effective than Direct Instruction Model to teach reading but for the students who have low intelligence, Direct Instruction Model is more effective than Group Investigation Model to teach reading. In accordance with the above result, the English teacher is expected to be able to select the appropriate teaching model to teach reading for the students who have high or low intelligence.
